Road Ready Picks helps drivers choose the small pieces of gear that keep a car usable on an ordinary day and on a bad one: tire inflators, jump starters, battery chargers and maintainers, OBD2 scanners, dash cams and CarPlay add-ons. Every guide starts with one practical question: will this do the job in your car, with your tires, battery and phone?
Why we focus on specs that matter
Car accessory listings are full of big numbers. “8000A.” “150 PSI.” “Inflates a tire in 35 seconds.” Some of those numbers help you choose. Others are measured in ways the listing never explains. We try to separate the two:
- Tire inflators: the pressure your tires actually need, airflow, duty cycle and how the maker measured its inflation-time claim.
- Jump starters: the engine sizes the maker supports, safety features, and whether the pack lists a safety standard such as UL 2743.
- Battery chargers and maintainers: charging current, battery chemistries supported (flooded, AGM, lithium) and what the charger does when it is left connected for weeks.
- OBD2 scanners: what the tool can read beyond basic engine codes, update terms and vehicle coverage.
- Dash cams and CarPlay gear: what the device needs from your car and phone, how it gets power and sound, and what owners report after months of use.
If a maker does not publish a figure, we say “not listed” instead of guessing.
How we research
Road Ready Picks is a small independent site that publishes under pen names. We research products using manufacturer specifications and manuals, retailer listings, standards bodies, recall databases and patterns in verified owner feedback. Where an independent publication has measured something, we name that publication and link to it. We have not used the products in our guides, and we never write as if we had. If that ever changes for a specific product, the article will say so clearly.
AI tools do much of our research and drafting. Before an article is published, we check its key specs against the source, and the site owner is responsible for what we publish. The full process is on our How We Review page, the criteria we use to order products are on How We Rank, and our editing standards are on our Editorial Policy page.
Meet the authors (pen names)
Our bylines are pen names. Each one covers a specific group of products so that the same checklist applies across related guides. They are not real individual people, and they do not hold mechanic certifications or other credentials. They are labels for the editorial team’s work in each area.
- Cal Brennick covers tire inflators, portable air compressors and jump starters.
- Owen Sayer covers battery chargers, battery maintainers and OBD2 scanners.
- Tess Marlowe covers in-car tech: CarPlay adapters, portable CarPlay screens and dash cams.
- Lena Corvin writes our single-product reviews and head-to-head comparisons.
How we make money
Road Ready Picks is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide our rankings, and brands cannot pay for placement. Read our full Affiliate Disclosure.
We are an independent site and are not affiliated with Amazon, any automaker or any manufacturer we write about.
A note on safety
Our content is general product information. It is not professional mechanical, electrical or legal advice. Always follow your vehicle owner’s manual and the product manual, especially for jump starting, battery charging and lithium battery care.
